Banja Ždrelo

Petrovac na Mlavi, Spas

Thermal spa (38–40 °C) at the foot of the Homolje mountains, 10 km from Petrovac na Mlavi. Known for outdoor winter bathing: a transparent heated tunnel links the pools with the wellness centre. Open year-round, at the entrance to the Ždrelo gorge.

Banja Ždrelo lies about 10 km south-east of Petrovac na Mlavi, at the foot of the Homolje mountains, right at the entrance to the Ždrelo gorge — the canyon the river Mlava has cut through the limestone rock of Homolje. It is a small, quiet destination that combines thermal facilities with the unspoilt nature of the Braničevo district.

Thermal spring and water temperature

The thermal water at Ždrelo reaches 38 to 40 °C — warm enough for comfortable bathing outdoors even in winter, with snow all around. That is what makes Banja Ždrelo distinctive: outdoor winter bathing is its main attraction and the reason many guests come precisely in the cold months.

Pools and wellness

The complex has both outdoor and indoor facilities:

Outdoor pools:

  • Recreational pools with thermal water (40 °C)
  • Pools with hydromassage
  • Small pools with underwater massage
  • Capacity: up to 100 bathers at a time
  • Open all year round

The signature feature is a transparent heated tunnel connecting the outdoor pools with the indoor building — bathers move between inside and outside without being exposed to the cold, which makes winter bathing genuinely comfortable.

Indoor wellness building:

  • Jacuzzi and massage tubs
  • Sauna
  • Solarium
  • Massage rooms

Please consult a doctor before undergoing spa treatments.

The Ždrelo gorge and the Homolje mountains

The spa sits directly beside the Ždrelo gorge — one of the finest river gorges in the Braničevo district, where the Mlava has carved its way through the limestone of Homolje. The gorge is accessible on foot and offers:

  • Walking trails along the river through the canyon
  • Fishing in the Mlava, rich in trout and chub
  • Birdwatching — the gorge is home to numerous birds of prey

The wider Homolje region is known for its cultural history, necropolises and Thracian cult sites, as well as for Gornjak Monastery in the nearby Gornjak gorge.

Visiting

Banja Ždrelo is open throughout the year. Weekend trips from Belgrade and Požarevac are the most common pattern — it is about 150 km from Belgrade by main road via Požarevac and Petrovac na Mlavi. Accommodation is available at the spa and in surrounding households.
