Avenues

Terazije StreetTogether with the appearance of big and small green areas, also the streets planted with trees started to appear.

The first line of trees appeared between 1845 and 1850 in Abadžijska market ( Kraljice Natalije Street ) on both sides of the road.

The following avenues appeared in 1859 in Terazije Street and in 1860 in Kneza Miloša Street, Bulevar  Vojvode Misica Street, part of Kralja Milana Street, etc.

The biggest number of today’ s lines of trees was planted in the period 1930 – 1936. All this was taking place in the 19th century, only a few decades after the beginning of the long battle of Serbian people for independence.

The modern Belgrade inherited very few parks. The historical circumstances and its specific geographic location were not very favorable to the duration and preservation of the inherited parks.

The majority of the parks were built in the second half of the 19th century and in the first decades of the 20th century. The most well – known parks are the following : Kalemegdan, Topčider, Pioneer’ s Park, Academic Park, Financial Park, Karadjordje’ s Park, Tašmajdan, Zemun Park, Manjež Park, Cyril and Methodius’ s Park and Friendship Park.

The form, nature and content of Belgrade park prove that they occupy a very important position in the life of the city. Even though there are not enough of them and even though they are small or smaller than they should be, the parks of  Belgrade, especially those in the city itself, are located in the most beautiful places. From these places the city is presented at its best.

There are 62 different parks occupying 385 hectares.
